Our Dream Charente Holiday Property

Eric and Claire's story of transforming a neglected traditional Charentaise building into their dream Charente Maritime holiday property.

The front view of our traditional stone house in the village of Gourvillette, Charente Maritime, France We bought this traditional Charentaise property in 2003 when, after having visited France many times, we turned our dream of owning a house there into reality.

We chose a property in Charente Maritime as it has a glorious climate, being second only to the Côte D'Azure for the annual days of brilliant sunshine.

We found a house in the tranquil village of Gourvillette which was structurally sound but in need of a great deal of tender loving care following years of little or no maintenance.

Our dream property in Gourvillette, Charente Maritime, required a great deal of tender loving care! We spent every holiday from our jobs in engineering and teaching over the next two years working on the property, helped by the services of the local builder and electrician.

When we took over the holiday property, the accommodation was very basic and lacked both a bathroom and a functioning kitchen. However, the property was typical of the Charente Maritime and we have been at pains to preserve its traditional character.

It now boasts two bathrooms and a fully fitted kitchen. The original features of the property with its wooden beams, quarry tile floors and spiral staircase have been retained, a sympathetic fusion of the traditional and the modern.

Although the services of a builder, an electrician and a decorator were all employed, much of the restoration of the holiday property was a labour of love by ourselves as we brought this empty property back to life and made it the delightful and stylish holiday property it is today.

We enjoy the peace and tranquility of the immediate surroundings. We love the swallows nesting in our barn and the owl that roosts there as well as the colourful hoopoes and magestic birds of prey out in the vines. We enjoy the sun streaming into the house and the many places to sit and read or the opportunity for a game of Pool in our Games Room or Boule outside the back door! We enjoy the fact that there is so much to visit and explore within a very small area.

The village itself is set among tranquil vineyards and fields of sunflowers and the quiet country lanes are ideal for walking and cycling (bikes available at the house).

Charente Maritime is renowned for its peaceful countryside, the wide open skies and clear light. It has good communication links, being only half a day's driving from Channel Ports and has the choice of three regional airports.

The region caters for everyone, music lovers, history buffs, cyclists, walkers, nature lovers while the coast is only just over an hour away for beach bums. Summer time is wonderful, so many concerts, festivals and sporting opportunities including swimming in local lakes, canoeing on the Charente or a game of golf in Cognac.

Relaxing in the sunshine after all the hard work. After all the hard work, we can sit in the beautiful sunshine of the Charente Maritime enjoying our dream house and garden and we would like you to be able to enjoy it too.

So come and rent our holiday property in the Charente Maritime and share our dream.
